Thomas Goldsmith worked as a journalist and musician in Nashville for more than thirty years before taking the position of features editor at the Raleigh News and Observer in 2003. In addition to his newspaper journalism, including several posts at the Tennessean in Nashville, Goldsmith has written about music for a variety of trade and consumer publications as well as in collections published by various academic presses. His songs have been recorded by artists who include the Nashville Bluegrass Band, Riders in the Sky, Uncle Walt's Band and David Olney. He has also appeared as a sideman on recordings by Hazel Dickens, the Whitstein Brothers, Riders in the Sky and others. He has produced recordings by Tracy Nelson, David Olney, Tom House, the Nashville Jug Band and Elise Witt.
