American chamber vocal ensemble, established in 1957 by a renowned musicologist, Baroque and Renaissance specialist and music critic Edward Tatnall Canby and based in New York. Since 1994, the ensemble's director has been a soprano and music scholar Sheila Schonbrun. The Canby Singers performs a broad range of lesser-known choral works, frequenting "early music" and Renaissance composers, like Claudio Monteverdi, William Byrd, and Roland de Lassus in their concerts. However, the choir expands into other eras and genres, featuring vocal compositions by Johannes Brahms, Paul Hindemith, Elliott Carter and commissions from contemporary composers. After Canby's retirement in the 1980s, the group continued performing under its original name in his honor.
