American Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Rio Grande; scholar of Appalachian culture; and renowned expert on traditional country and bluegrass music. Born May 1, 1940 in Athens, Ohio. Died April 4, 2023 in Gallipolis, Ohio. A widely published author who has written in more than 200 articles for publications such as "Bluegrass Unlimited", "JEMF Quarterly", "Old-Time Music", "The Devil’s Box", "Pickin'", "The Journal of Appalachian Studies", "Mid-America Folklore", "Goldenseal: West Virginia Traditional Life", and the "Tennessee Folklore Society Bulletin", as well as in his contributions to "Definitive Country: The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Country Music and its Performers". Tribe authored more than 40 books; record reviews appearing in such publications as "The Journal of American Folklore" and "The Journal of Country Music", and liner notes for more than 80 record albums. He has also written a book-length history of country music in West Virginia, a book on the history of the Stoneman family, and "Country – A Regional Exploration". In 2016, he wrote a book entitled "Bluegrass and Traditional Country Music Originals", published by University of Tennessee Press.
