Tomás Ponce Reyes

Director, composer, double bass player, clarinetist and pianist He was born on September 18, 1886 in Sagua la Grande. He died on September 10, 1972 in Mexico City. He studied at the National Music Conservatory of Mexico City with Julián Carrillo and Gustavo E. Campa.  He was an excellent musician and above all a brilliant composer, who has remained for history not only because of the large number of danzones he composed, but because Tomás (along with El Babuco) was the first to "take out" the danzón of Cuba and therefore , definitely internationalize. Previously, the danzón only arrived in Mexico sporadically, but in 1905 Tomás Ponce and Triburcio Hernández built a "Danzonera" in Veracruz and it was then that the Danzón became a real and maddening fashion. He was a great director and composer, but he also executed perfectly the piano, clarinet and double bass. Still young leaves to Havana where he manages to consolidate his orchestra (Orchestra of Ponce), also his father was a musician and composer, so we are not sure that all of these compositions are his.
