Nap (Nathan) de Klijn ( Amsterdam , August 16 , 1909 - Laren , August 23, 1979 ) was a Dutch violinist . He was primarius of the Netherlands String Quartet , formed the Amsterdam Duo with his wife Alice Heksch and taught violin as a principal subject at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague . De Klijn was an internationally known and appreciated violinist who regularly performed as a soloist and with his ensembles in the Netherlands and abroad. He formed the Pro Arte Trio with Cor de Groot and Joop Cantor for decades . He formed the Amsterdam Duo with pianist Alice Heksch , whom he married in 1936 . The couple settled in Laren NH and earned their living by giving concerts and lessons. Three children were born of the marriage. In 1950, De Klijn founded the Nieuw Hollands String Quartet . From 1952 it was given its final name: Dutch String Quartet. In 1960 De Klijn remarried Liesbeth Mulder. Three children were born of this marriage. After his divorce in 1972 he married Aagje Kramer. He had a son with her. Nap de Klijn was decorated as a knight in the order of Oranje-Nassau in 1968 and promoted to officer in this order in 1975. On August 23, 1979, a week after his 70th birthday, he unexpectedly died of a heart attack during a studio recording with Rudolf Jansen.
