Oliver Wendell Holmes

American physician, professor, lecturer, and author, August 29, 1809 – October 7, 1894, he is considered a member of the Fireside Poets. He is also recognized as an important medical reformer, e.g. in 1843 he published an essay which predated 'germ theory of disease', and in 1846 he coined the word 'anesthesia'.
