Chris Arrell (1970) serves as Director of Theory and Composition at Clayton College & State University in suburban Atlanta. He holds degrees from Cornell University (DMA 2002), the University of Texas at Austin (MM 1998), and the University of Oregon (BM 1995), and attended Columbia University as an Exchange Scholar. He has participated in composition master classes at the Stockhausen Courses in Kurten (2003), the Music’99 Festival (1999); the Aspen Festival of Music (1997) and the Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium, and was selected for a residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts (1999). His principal teachers are Tristan Murail, Roberto Sierra, Steven Stucky, and Dan Welcher. Honors include commissions from Music at the Anthology (2004), Spivey Hall (2003), Cornell University (2002), and the Fromm Foundation at Harvard University (2001); grants from Clayton College & State University (2003-04), and the Cornell Council for the Arts (2001 & 2002); fellowships from Cornell (1998-2002), the University of Texas at Austin (1995-98), and the University of Oregon (1994); and composition prizes from the League of Composers/ISCM Composers Competition (2003), Cornell (2000), the region VI SCI/ASCAP Student Competition (1998), and ASCAP/Morton Gould (1997).
