Masha Makarova (b. 1977) is a Russian singer, songwriter, poet and musician from Krasnodar. In 1997, Makarova signed a contract with Oleg Nesterov who started producing the singer. The same year she founded a rock group Masha i Medvedi and relocated to Moscow. The band gained huge success and released two studio albums in the following three years. Right before the major gig at the Maxidrom Festival in 2000, Makarova had a fight with other Masha i Medvedi members – they cancelled the show that night and disbanded. In 1999, she recorded hit song Gde Tsvety? («Где цветы?») with Oleg Nesterov (a remake of 'Where Have All the Flowers Gone' performed by Marlene Dietrich, Dalida and other popular singers). At the end of the 2004, Masha i Medvedi reunited with a new producer Erik Chanturia. Makarova started an electronic project Ya Maha in 2008 with Sergey Minko and Victor Burko, who previously had been producing electronic remixes for Masha i Medvedi. The group only recorded one song before Makarova decided she is not interested in a full-time side project.
