John Donnelly (1938 - September 1, 1997) was a respected Scottish trumpet player known for his remarkable talent and contributions to the world of jazz. Born in Neilston, Renfrewshire, Scotland, John hailed from a family with a strong tradition of brass music. He displayed an early aptitude for the trumpet and began his musical journey by performing with dance bands in the Paisley area during his teens. Despite receiving a junior form contract with Celtic football club, John chose to pursue his true passion for music. After completing his apprenticeship as an electrician, he served in the Royal Artillery Band in Dortmund, Germany, during his National Service. In the early 1960s, John played with various bands in the Glasgow area, including notable stints with Benny Daniels and Johnny Kildare. His versatility and talent led him to London, where he joined the Ray McVey Orchestra. Here, his career gained momentum as he became the lead trumpet player for acclaimed shows like West Side Story, Billy Liar, and Jesus Christ Superstar. John's adaptability allowed him to collaborate with a range of artists, including Jack Jones, Aretha Franklin, Paul McCartney, Tom Jones, and more. A pivotal moment in his career came in 1970 when he was invited to lead the trumpet section in the big band of Canadian trumpet virtuoso Maynard Ferguson. This collaboration propelled him to greater recognition, with appearances on television, performances at prestigious jazz venues like Ronnie Scott's, and world tours alongside renowned jazz musicians. Despite his success, John Donnelly remained grounded as a family-oriented individual. He returned to Paisley around 1975, where he continued to perform at venues such as the Talk of the Town and BBC Scotland. As opportunities for musicians dwindled, John transitioned to a career in music education, excelling as an instructor of brass instruments. His dedication and passion for teaching earned him high regard among his students and peers. John Donnelly possessed an extraordinary musical ear and the ability to arrange compositions without relying on a piano. While his compositions were relatively few, their quality reflected his status as a skilled jazz composer.
