Michael Lloyd, born in Stoke Newington, grew up in Wood Green, North London where he attended Earlham Infant and Junior School, Saint Thomas More Secondary School, and Tottenham College of Technology where he studied Mechanical and Production Engineering. A non-smoker and fitness fanatic, Michael developed his fascination for roots reggae music by being greatly influenced by the numerous sound systems, radio D.J.'s and spending his pocket money buying pre-release singles. Dreaming of one day making his own records, Michael set about in earnest, writing songs and singing for the next several years, during which his long time friend, U.K. Scientist, was also busy experimenting with sound, building "riddims" and mixing at his home studio. In December 1998, that dream became reality when he formed his "BACK-2-BASICS" label (SMP Records) with the aid of U.K. Scientist. Michael rates Jah Shaka Sound system, Jahlovemuzik deejay Brigadier Jerry, singer Johnny Clarke, producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes, the Roots Radics Band and engineer Scientist as some of his main influences, because their styles were so distinctive. "TIME CRITICAL", Michael Lloyd's debut album cuts a raw Jamaican "feel" and "presence" akin to the conscious vibes of the late 1970's, but with a 21st century edge. - Selwyn Philbert
