Axel Herjö

Swedish viola player and music educator. born Johnsson, born March 16, 1925 in Sveg, Jämtland county, Härjedalen, died July 25, 2011 in Höja, Ängelholm parish, Malmöhus county. After basic studies in Sweden, he was able to study in Rome and Berlin with the support of scholarships. He worked in most of Stockholm's symphony and chamber orchestras, such as the Hovkapellet, the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the Radio Symphony Orchestra. During the years 1978 to 1990 he was rector of the Falun Conservatory of Music. His interest in Härjedal folk music in particular led to the recording of a series of CDs together with his daughter Karin Herjö (1965–). Sons Lars Herjö (1954–) and Mats Herjö (1957–) are professionals as music teachers. In 1983, he received the Medal for the Promotion of Music - the Royal Academy of Music's highest award.
