Lights (born Valerie Anne Poxleitner; April 11, 1987) is a Canadian singer and songwriter. Born in Timmins, Ontario, Lights was taught guitar from a young age, and was part of a metal band called Shovel Face during high school. After amassing a following through her MySpace page, Lights officially began her solo career, writing and composing several songs for Sony Music Publishing. In March 2008, her debut single "Drive My Soul" was released and achieved moderate success in her native country, peaking at number eighteen. After signing to Underground Operations in August of that year, Lights' debut self-titled EP was released in September and featured "February Air" and "Ice", both released as singles in December 2008 and March 2009 respectively. Her full-length debut album, The Listening, was released in September 2009 and was successful around North America. "Saviour" was the lead single, while a re-mastered version of "Ice" received a video in October and gained over ten million views on YouTube. The last single of the LP was "Second Go", whose music video was filmed in one take. While not promoted as a single, "The Last Thing on Your Mind" was a known song as it was featured in Old Navy commercials. Siberia, her sophomore studio album, was released in 2011 to critical acclaim. At the suggestion of her manager, Lights decided to collaborate with the Toronto-based electronica band Holy Fuck to create a dubstep influenced album. One of the singles was "Toes". A synthpop dance track, "Toes" was relased in July 2011 in North America, and was distributed through the United Kingdom in summer 2012. An acoustic album for Siberia was released in April 2013, which featured a collaboration with group Owl City. Lights' third studio album, Little Machines, became available for purchase in October 2014. "Up We Go", the lead single, was met with moderate success in Canada, reaching the top forty on the Canadian Hot 100. "Running with the Boys" received radio play in early 2015 as the second official single, while "Portal" and "Same Sea" received promotional releases. Similarly to Siberia, Little Maniches also received an acoustic album, titled Midnight Machines in March 2016. In April 2017, Lights announced her fourth studio album, Skin & Earth. The album was accompanied by a comic book series drawn and written by Lights. Each song was released per each edition on a monthly basis until the album was released in full, starting from July. Prior to the album's release in September, "Giants" was promoted as the lead single and achieved chart entries in Canada and US, while "Skydiving", "Savage", and "New Fears" served as promotional singles. PEP, her fifth album, was released on April 1, 2022, and yielded several singles as well as collaborations with Josh Dun and Elohim. Lights' music draws influences from electropop, synthpop and indietronica. She has won several awards, including two Juno Awards for her 2014 and 2016 albums; the others receiving nominations. New Artist of the Year was also awarded to her in 2009. The Listening was certified platinum in Canada, while Siberia and Little Machines received golden certicications.
