Lasar Segall

(July 21, 1889 – August 2, 1957) A Lithuanian Jewish and Brazilian painter, engraver and sculptor. Born in Vilnus, Lithuania (then part of the Russian Empire), he first visited Brazil in 1912, and moved there permanently in 1923. While his work was considered degenerate and preposterous in Europe, in Brazil he was considered one of that country’s most influential modern artists.
