Elaine Brown was conductor or the Temple University Choirs, and Director of Choral Activities at the College of Music, has achieved a world-wide reputation as one of the leading choral directors and teachers of our time. Aside from her conducting activities at the University, Mrs. Brown also taught graduate courses at Temple and conducted the Singing City Choir, which she founded in 1948. It was also that same year (1948) that Mrs. Brown and the Temple Choirs began what has become an almost annual series of concert appearances with the Philadelphia Orchestra and conductor Eugene Ormandy. She has also prepared choirs for appearances with Stokowski, Stravinsky, Mehta, Leinsdorf, Bernstein, Abbado, Casals, Giulini and Levine. Mrs. Brown was the first American woman to lead the Philadelphia Orchestra when she conducted a 1972 performance of Stravinsky's 'Symphony of Psalms.' She was at the focal point of choral art and is one of America's most honored conductors.
