b. March 30th, 1932, Moon Run, PA. d. September 9th, 2020, Oakdale, PA. Fred Gregorich and his Del-Fi's delighted fans for more than thirty years on the Pittsburgh polka scene. Took inspiration from the lively polka style of Kenny Bass and his top accordionists, Joe Luzar, Dick Sodja, and Bob Timko. Continued to appear with top bands, especially in recent years with the Frank Stanger Orchestra. Honored with Lifetime Achievement and induction into the Polka Hall of Fame in 2002. Took up the accordion at age 19. A year later was playing professionally with the Frankie Trio and the Polka Knights of Burgettstown. Led the Polka Toppers in 1954, and later changed the band’s name to Fred Gregorich and the Del-Fis. The group performed throughout the Penn-Ohio area and was a frequent featured band at Tony Petkovsek’s Thanksgiving Polka Weekend. The Del-Fis recorded five albums and scored a hit with his original, “Cheese and Crackers Polka.” Was also the second accordionist with the Bob Timko band at the first Polka Mass celebrated by Fr. George Balasko in Lowellville, Ohio in 1972. Joined the Centurions after the Del-Fis disbanded in 1982 and got back on the scene with the Sam Pugliano Orchestra, staying for thirteen years, as well as with the Del Sinchak Orchestra. Also recorded with Canada’s Polka King Walter Ostanek, Ron Pivovar, The Polka Quads, Sam Pugliano, Ray Skovenski, Frank Stanger and Jack Tady.
