Son of conductor and composer Horst Schneider (2) and brother of author Peter Schneider (15). Michael Schneider was born in Königsberg/East Prussia in 1943. He studied biology at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg and the Sorbonne in Paris. He then studied philosophy, social sciences and religious studies at the Free University of Berlin. In 1974 he received his doctorate on Marx and Freud. He worked as an editor at the publishing house Klaus Wagenbach, as a freelance journalist and writer. From 1975 he worked as a dramaturge and in-house writer at the Hessisches Staatstheater in Wiesbaden. From 1981 he was a permanent employee of the ZDF-Matinee. Since 1991 he has worked as a lecturer and since 1995 as a professor at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy in the screenwriting department. He is a member of the PEN Club, the Academic Advisory Board of Attac Germany and the Magic Circle. His work consists of numerous publications, essays, novellas and plays.
