Norwegian conductor, born 6 April 1957 in Drøbak, Norway. Conducted the Ukrainian State Orchestra in Kiev from 1989-95. From 1990 until 1995 he was also the principal guest conductor of the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra. In 1997 he became the chief conductor and music director of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra in Riga. In 1999 he was appointed chief conductor and music director of the Thüringen Philharmonie Gotha-Suhl. In 2006 Terje Mikkelsen was appointed principal conductor of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. Appears regularly with: The St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio. Has conducted: The Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, the Hamburg Radio Symphony Orchestra (NDR), the Rotterdam Philharmonic orchestra, the Belgian Radio and Television Philharmonic Orchestra, the Welsh Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra de l’Opéra Bastille and the Philharmonia Hungarica.
