Isobel Caldwell

Born in Hong Kong and raised mostly in Naarm, Isobel Caldwell is an artist who weaves together her reflections and observations on life experiences with an intricate and meditative style. With a delicate balance of soft, soaring vocals, and lilting guitar arrangements, her music has been described as a warm hug; the perfect tonic for a weary mind. Isobel began writing songs at the tender age of 7, when her Mum made her some books to write stories and poems in. This evolved further after moving to Kulin Nations land in 2005, first writing songs with piano, and then with guitar, which she took to the streets busking in the CBD as a teenager. After leaving school, Isobel studied jazz performance, and she brings elements of many genres to her sound and shows, drawing on the styles she has fallen in love with over the years. Exploring the different textures in her sound and writing, she takes great influence from artists such as Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Norah Jones, Fiona Apple and Missy Higgins (to name a few of many). Expressive and emotive vocals aside, Isobel’s signature ability to make the simplest, everyday observations laden with meaning and emotional subtext has both a grounding and boundless effect, always seeking to delve a little deeper into the significance of everything around us. With a wealth of performing experience under her belt as a band member of soul/funk 8 piece The Mamas, and ⅕ of wonky rock sweethearts Quality Used Cars, 2022 is set to be a monumentous year for Isobel, where she will release her debut album ‘Duty of Care’, a chronicle of various experiences and processes from the past 3 years.
