Owl Woman

Owl Woman (fl.1880?), a Papago Indian medicine woman from the American Southwest. Taught her medicine songs by spirits of the dead, Owl Woman received hundreds of them during her lifetime. Those set to music by Nancy Van de Vate and recorded on VMM 2028 "are part of a longer sequence intended to be sung over a sick person at four intervals throughout the night." -- notes from Nancy Van de Vate's booklet notes accompanying Vienna Modern Masters release VMM 2028
