American documentary filmmaker, producer and screenwriter (b. 23 August 1952, Phoenix, Arizona). Kirby Dick directed over 15 critically-acclaimed documentaries and earned numerous accolades and prizes, including two "Best Documentary Feature" Oscar nominations for Twist of Faith (2005) about the Catholic church's child sexual abuse and The Invisible War (2012), which exposed the epidemic of rape in the US military. He studied at Nova Scotia College Of Arts And Design, California Institute Of The Arts and the AFI Conservatory. Dick's best-known movies include Sick: The Life And Death Of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist (1997), dedicated to notorious sadomasochist and performance artist Bob Flanagan. The film took over a decade to complete, and Flanagan only agreed to participate on the condition that the final cut would include his death. It earned several awards, including a "Special Jury Prize" at Sundance Film Festival and "Best Feature Film" at Los Angeles Independent Film Festival, propelling Dick's career as an aspiring star in independent filmmaking. In 2002, Kirby Dick co-directed Derrida, a biopic documentary exploring the life and work of controversial French philosopher Jacques Derrida, winning the "Golden Gate Award" at the San Francisco International Film Festival.
