Born November 10, 1959 in Alexandria, Virginia. She is the daughter of John Phillips and Susan Adams (John's first wife), sister of Bijou Phillips, and half-sister of Chynna Phillips. She is also the mother of Shane Barakan with ex-husband Shane Fontayne. Phillips gained stardom as an actress in the George Lucas film American Graffiti, and on the U.S. TV sitcom, One Day at a Time alongside Valerie Bertinelli and Bonnie Franklin. Having sporadically sung both on record and in several of her acting roles, Phillips would make her formal musical debut in the 80s as the soprano role of her father's revival band, The New Mamas and The Papas. This incarnation of the band would also include Spanky McFarlane, and alternating members Denny Doherty and Scott McKenzie. During Phillips' tenure, the group would tour extensively, and go on to record an album (Many Mamas, Many Papas). Aside from singing the Michelle Phillips / Jill Gibson parts from the parent band's catalogue, Phillips would also co-write and take lead on songs like "Crying in the Shower" and "Love Song". In the late 90s, she landed the starring role of "Molly Phillips" on the paranormal Disney Channel Original Series So Weird, executive produced by Henry Winkler. There, Phillips played a touring rock star mother of two, and performed and recorded three seasons of original music—largely written by a team of Annmarie Cullen and Jon Cooksey specifically for her voice. Towards the show's end, she would also duet with Alexz Johnson. Phillips later wrote two books (the 2009 best seller High on Arrival and 2017's Hopeful Healing), and since 2013, has been a substance use disorder counselor and director of referral relations at Breathe Life Healing Centers based in Los Angeles, CA.
