Swedish bassist and guitarist, born 29 November 1949 in Linköping. He formed the band "Johnny Sox" in Lund, Sweden with Hugh Cornwell in the early 1970´s. Other members were US draft dodgers exiled in Sweden and guitarist Hans Wärmling. The band moved to North London ca 1973, but Wärmling stayed home in Sweden. Johhny Sox fizzled out when the US granted amnesty for exiled Vietnam War military service evaders and the Americans could return home without facing prison sentences. Knutsson and Corwell then was contacted by Jet Black after placing a classified ad in the music weeklies. They started playing, but Knutsson returned to Sweden before the formation of The Stranglers. Back home, he joined Kal P. Dal & Pedalens Pågar. Apart from singer Kal. P Dal, Knutsson was the only permanent member in the band´s many fluid line-ups until Kal P. Dal died in 1985. Since then he's performed with Pedalens Pågar, a Kal P. Dal tribute band consisting of former band members and close friends and associates. Jan Knutsson is a now retired horticulturist and teacher.
