American composer, librettist and lyricist primarily for musicals and revues. Born July 9, 1886 in Lake Forest, Illinois. Died January 15, 1938 of cirrhosis of the liver in Lynbrook, New York. He was known primarily for musicals and revues. He wrote the book and lyrics for over 20 musicals and revues for the Shubert family, including several iterations of The Passing Show. As a Tin Pan Alley songwriter he charted seven times between 1911-1919 in the U.S., with his top song coming in 1914 and hitting #1: "By the Beautiful Sea" by The Heidelberg Quintet (co-written by Harry Carroll). He also hit #2 in 1919 with "Tell That to the Marines" by Al Jolson (co-written by Jean Schwartz & Al Jolson). He was the in-house lyricist and stage director for the Shubert brothers and their revues at the Winter Garden Theater in New York.
