American Tin Pan Alley era composer and occasional lyricist, pianist, and publisher McConnell's first song was published in 1913, "If Each Dream I Dream Were a Rose", when he was 19 years old. He was also an active pianist, and from 1914 to 1916 he played the vaudeville circuit in an act billed "Longbrake, McConnell and Richardson." During his career, he collaborated with such songwriters as Dick Sanford, Morton Downey, Al Dubin and Nat Osborne. He continued to write until 1946, when rock & roll and other styles started to take over the older styles, and "Where Are You, Love?" became his last published song.
