The Western Group Big Band was formed by Colonel Wiktor Afanasjew in 1988, the Artistic Leader and Principal Director of the Western Group of Russian Forces. The ensemble numbers 17 musicians and constitutes an integral part of the 60 piece staff band. Musically it follows the tradition of Major Glenn Miller's US-Army Air Corps Big Band.
