Hugo Piper

London based bassist, writer, producer, graphic designer. As a performing and recording artist Hugo works regularly in a variety of contexts, spanning a range of playing styles, across the globe. After several year of playing drums between the ages of 8-12, Hugo eventually picked up the bass. It was his interest in funk and soul music that ultimately steered him towards Jazz. Hugo begun playing in his local big band, as well as attending the National Youth Jazz Collective, where he learnt about improvisation and performing with smaller Jazz ensembles. After auditioning in his final year of sixth form, Hugo received a place to study Jazz at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, graduating in 2020. Growing up through a mixture of playing circumstances, he takes inspiration from a wide gamut of music, from jazz and rock, to folk and choral music. He now tours globally with Rex Orange County, alongside other London-based artists and projects, in performing, recording and writing contexts, including Conor Albert, Marie Dahlstøm, Cherise, Emma Rawicz, Raquel Martins, Nectar Woode, Eliza Oakes, Mackwood, Roman Lewis, Mitch Sanders. Hugo is also a co-founder of Your Blind Passenger, a live-electronic and acoustic crossover trio, with a deep focus on improvisation, including bandmates Christos Stylianides and Jack Robson.
