The group was formed in 2015 when guitarist Mathias Havelund and bass player Mathias Wedeken met lead singer Christian Stage and drummer Filip Gulløv, who were looking for new members to start a band. The four band members decided to write a lot of new material expressing the sound and the direction in which they wanted to move. Trying it out at live gigs and gaining experience, Mansfield found out that the strength of the band was in the quality of the songwriting. Their new material would become the songs that ended up on the band’s first album. In 2019, Mansfield signed a record deal with indie label DME and on May 29, 2020, the band’s debut album ‘Star-Crossed Lovers’ was released online and on vinyl. Mansfield’s energetic music is honest, direct and instantly appealing, cleverly fusing contemporary rock with the legendary 1960’s Mersey Sound of Liverpool. This Danish rock band delivers catchy and to-the-point songs that ooze of toe-tapping energy. The four band members of Mansfield have made their retro-cool mod-style suits their trademark when performing. Both visually and musically, the quartet takes the audience on a journey back to the early 1960’s. The band takes its name after Mansfield, a former coal mining town in the East Midlands of England. Mansfield creates their own unique sound by mixing elements of Motown and guitar pop of the 1960’s, while legendary bands such as Travis and Oasis have influenced the songwriting. Especially lead singer Christian Stage’s vocal with its clear and characteristic sound is reminiscent of the Smiths. The sound of British guitar rock is close to the band members’ hearts and came naturally to lead singer Christian Stage. In his youth, he lived in Dublin, Ireland as well as in the North of England where he travelled around performing in bars and at youth clubs and schools. He noticed how the audience responded in a positive way to his direct and catchy songs, and continued to build and develop his songwriting from there. Mansfield’s debut album ’Star-Crossed Lovers’ was recorded and produced by Jakob Winther, known for his work with artists such as Lukas Graham, Scarlet Pleasure, Mads Langer, Go Go Berlin, among others. The album was mixed and mastered by Morten Bue, who has worked with the likes of Mew, Kashmir, Moi Caprice, Bob Hund and The Rumour Said Fire. Upon the release of the album, Mansfield’s single ‘A Place in the Sun’ quickly became a hit on Danish national radio and in July, ‘Star-Crossed Lovers’ was awarded Album of the Week on radio station P5. In the Danish press, the album has received 4 and 5 star reviews in which critics have compared the band to The Beatles, Oasis and The Kinks as well as Danish rock band The Beatophonics. So far, 7 out of 11 album tracks have been played on Danish national radio, which is an achievement for a debut album. The band has received praise from British producer Paul Schroeder, producer of The Stone Roses and The Verve, and John Hassall from the British rock band The Libertines, who both live in Denmark.
