Mello K

Rapper from The Bronx, NY area who recorded his first and only album in Los Angeles, CA on L.A. Boy Records. Mello K boasted an intriguing marketing strategy: ‘My rhymes are basically about females because they take to the music and they encourage guys to buy it’. Of West Indian descent, Mello K was brought up a native of New York, and first emerged as a serious artist in 1990. It was then that he was given the opportunity to work with Keith Sweat and Charlie Wilson from the Gap Band, subsequently forming his own posse, 40 Deep, hooking up with producer Monti Blues and reggae DJ Shawnie Ranks. Through Ranks Mello K debuted on his L.A. Boy Records. He also guested on the single ‘Do Me’, a slow-burning narrative reminiscent of lovers rock. It was this sort of material that gave Mello K his name, but his debut album proved him equally capable of gruff, hard-nosed raps.
