Powell•Peralta is an American skateboard company founded by an engineer/designer George Powell (5) and professional skater Stacy Peralta in 1978. It was one of the most iconic skateboard brands in the '80s, sponsoring the legendary Bones Brigade crew from 1979 to 1991.
Started initially as Powell Corp by George Powell in 1976, the company formed a small team of riders to promote its decks and wheels, led by Ray "Bones" Rodriguez. In 1978, Stacy Peralta joined the new venture and took over marketing efforts, including the skating crew. Known as "Bones Brigade" since '79, the team recruited some of the most talented and notable young skaters of the era, including Rodney Mullen, Steve Caballero, Tony Hawk (2), Brandon Novak, and [a2244897]. George Powell soon rebranded the company to 'Powell-Peralta,' signifying Stacy's massive contribution to the brand's promotion.
In 1983, Stacy Peralta directed and produced the crew's debut promotional film, Bones Brigade Video Show. This low-budget amateur video became an instant hit, with over 30,000 copies sold on VHS and Betamax. New Bones Brigade videos came out almost every year, including The Search for Animal Chin (1987), Ban This (89) and Propaganda (90).
Around 1991, Stacy Peralta left the company, with Powell carrying the business alone. Bones Brigade were effectively dissolved, but the in-house crew continued riding under the "Powell" brand, and regular promotional films ensued, starting with '92 Hot Batch. Two founders reunited in 2003 to launch the new "Powell Classic" line, restarting the "Powell Peralta" brand two years later. Currently, the company is a subsidiary of Skate One Corporation in Goleta, California, which owns and controls Powell-Peralta, Bones Bearings, BONES WHEELS, Mini-Logo, Bones Brigade, Animal Chin and several other related brands and websites.
